A Perfect Match: Peabody, Layla & The Power of Community
Some moments feel like they’re simply meant to be. Today, we experienced one of those moments with Peabody and Layla.
While out running errands, we received a call from Sarah, who was interested in adopting this bonded pair. She shared something deeply personal—she has epilepsy and wasn’t sure if we would judge her for that. Our answer? Absolutely not. If anything, it made us even more certain that this could be the perfect home for Peabody and Layla. They had always been by their previous owner’s side throughout the day, and now, with Sarah, they would have the same companionship, love, and routine they were used to.
But there was something else that made this even more special—Sarah’s beloved dog had passed away just two weeks ago. Her home felt empty without that constant companionship, and she wasn’t sure when she’d be ready to open her heart again. Then, through a twist of fate, Peabody and Layla found their way to her.
Sarah doesn’t have Facebook, but a friend saw our post about Peabody and Layla and shared it with her. That post had over 100 shares thanks to this incredible community. Because of you, because of every person who took a moment to share and spread the word, Peabody and Layla’s perfect person saw them. That is the power of community. That is why this program matters—because sometimes, all it takes is one connection to change lives.
We brought Peabody and Layla over for a home check, and everything felt just right. But then, something incredible happened. As we were wrapping up, the phone rang. It was Emily—their previous mom. Up until now, communication had only been through a caseworker, but this was the first direct conversation.
For the next 20 minutes, Emily and Sarah talked, sharing their love for these two sweet pups. And then, we learned something that gave us chills—Emily also has epilepsy, and over the past four years, Layla had naturally learned to recognize seizures and respond in a way that helped keep her owner safe. She wasn’t formally trained, but through their deep bond, she had developed an incredible intuition.
And here’s where fate played its part—had these phone calls happened just five minutes later, this connection wouldn’t have been made. Sarah might never have had the chance to hear Emily’s voice, to reassure her that Peabody and Layla were in the best hands. Emily wouldn’t have had the comfort of knowing, in real-time, that her beloved dogs were not just going to a good home, but the home they were meant for.
Beyond the perfect match of Peabody and Layla finding a new home, something even more beautiful came from this moment. Through loss, Sarah and Emily now have the opportunity to foster a friendship. Both have experienced the pain of saying goodbye—Emily to her dogs, and Sarah to her own beloved companion. Now, they are connected not just by these two amazing dogs, but by understanding, resilience, and shared love.
This is why The Crate Escape Crisis Comfort exists. To keep pets out of shelters. To help families in crisis. To create these beautiful, meant-to-be moments that remind us how powerful compassion and connection can be.
Peabody and Layla have found their perfect match. Emily found peace knowing they’re exactly where they need to be. And through an unexpected bond, Sarah and Emily have found support in each other.
Had the timing been different, this may not have happened. But fate had other plans.
Welcome home, sweet pups.
Sometimes, fate steps in when it’s needed most.
November 12, 2024, we received a call from a woman reaching out in absolute distress, looking for help from our Crisis Comfort program. She needed immediate care for her three dogs, and her voice was filled with desperation. We hung up at 10:37 a.m. and immediately reached out to Lea, one of our dedicated board members and volunteers, at 10:39.
In a moment of incredible timing, Lea happened to be just around the corner from the woman’s house—a part of town she rarely visits—and was only 30 seconds away. As Lea pulled up, the woman was being escorted to an ambulance, ready to get the help she needed. Without a moment’s hesitation, she tossed Lea her house keys, trusting us with her pets as she focused on her own healing.
This is what Crisis Comfort is all about—being there in those moments when it seems like there’s no one else to turn to. That day, we were exactly where we needed to be, at exactly the right time, to offer comfort and care. It’s a reminder of the strength in community, the importance of compassion, and the beautiful synchronicities that make a difference.
Now, her dogs are safe and cared for, and she can rest easy knowing they’re in loving hands while she focuses on herself. Moments like these remind us that we’re not alone; we’re part of something greater, and we’re here for each other.
